1. EAT MORE FOOD

I know this sounds counter-productive, but eating more food does speed up your rate of fat loss. Cutting calories too far, causes our metabolism to slow right down, making it much harder to lose fat.

You see, our body fat is stored on our bodies to survive when food is in limited supply. Drastically cutting calories causes our body to be reluctant to use up our fat stores. This is because it doesn’t know how long this period of food shortage will last for. So, for energy it will actually break down our muscle tissue and use that instead. This results in a loss of muscle and a slower metabolism.

If you eat more food, your body will think that hanging onto our excess fat is pointless. This is because there is more than enough energy coming in. It will then feel a lot more comfortable to use our fat stores for energy. Exactly what we want!

All that is needed is to take each muscle to failure once a week. Focus on the bigger lifts such as Dips, Chin Ups, Bench Press, Rows, Squats and Deadlifts. These exercises are much more efficient at stimulating the metabolism. There is a reason why they work so well though, they are hard work!

3. PERFORM INTENSE CARDIO

Like strength training, intense cardio also gives our metabolism a temporary boost for up to 72 hours afterwards. However we must really push the boundaries for this to happen. Walking or jogging has little to no effect on our metabolism.

The fastest way to speed up the metabolism and burn fat is to train hard, not long. An intense 10 minute run will do more than a 45 minute jog. This is because it speeds up the metabolism, stimulates muscle building hormones and burns more calories.

A great workout would be something as simple as going as hard as possible for 10 minutes in any exercise you choose. Increase the intensity by striving to outdo yourself each workout. Another great way is interval training. An example would be to go as hard as you can for a 30 seconds, followed by 30-60 seconds of active recovery. Do 6-10 total reps.

My personal favourite is sprinting. Choose a distance between 30-150m. Sprint the whole distance like your life depended on it. Recover by walking back to the starting line. 5-8 sprints will be more than enough.

The variety of food available today is so much greater than it was many years ago. There really isn’t much limit to what you can purchase as far as food goes but unfortunately with this wide range of food products also came the increased amount of additives, preservatives and sugars within our foods. The amount of ‘junk’ food available has increased significantly over recent years also and with that the problem of obesity has also increased.

Although there are many ‘low fat’ foods on the supermarket shelves, this ‘low fat’ labels itself can be quite deceiving. Often the ingredients that are used to replace the fatty elements of a product will contain more calories than the original fat. So if you are eating foods labeled ‘low fat’ and still can’t seem to lose weight then this is the reason. Let’s face it, the only real way to lose weight it to eat healthy foods and exercise regularly.

Pre-packed weight loss meals are also not that healthy a solution for losing weight. Although they may be convenient and alleviate the hassle of purchasing healthy ingredients, these foods may contain added preservatives that are really not that good for your health.

I know what you’re thinking right now….. A healthy diet sounds good but haven’t you tried that a thousand times before and just haven’t succeeded? Kicking My Heels

So there I am hiding myself away in this nursing home while whoever the manufacturer is decides to get his act together and get this Acomplia on the market. It’s frustrating. Here I am — been close to death twice now — and I need this Acomplia to pull me round. The way that doctor was talking, I pop an Acomplia or three and it’s the job done. Shame someone doesn’t know someone on the inside as can slip us a bottle or two on the quiet.

While I’m waiting, that district nurse keeps calling round. She seems to think I owe her for saving my life. Like who was it who opened the door? Cheeky thing! Anyway, she says she’s lumbered with me so I’d better start taking her seriously or else she won’t save me next time round.

Until this Acomplia comes, she’s topping me up with nicotine gum. We started off with the patches but I didn’t go for them. I find it better if I have something to do with my mouth. Looking at her I can think of things to do but we won’t go into that — or, at least, that’s what she would say.

She says, “Acomplia” like she’s spitting on the floor. She reckons the trick to giving up smoking is to change the way I do things. If I usually smoke in a particular place, I should stop going there. Right. So like I should suddenly stop going into the pub that feeds me and is like the zoo for all my friends to come visit me.

I’ve told her straight that there’s no way I’m going to start learning how to cook at my time of life. It’s Acomplia or nothing. That pub has fed me for nigh on twenty years which tells you something about how much of a traveller I am. It’s home to work to pub and home again for sleep. She looked a bit fierce but hasn’t said any more about it since.

But she’s really not hot on this Acomplia like the doctor. From what she’s read, it messes with your head so that you feel less hungry. That means it’s not like some magic bullet that’s going to change what I eat. I still have to do all the heavy lifting myself. And she’s not so sure how a “diet pill” is supposed to stop me from smoking. Acomplia can’t blow out the match as I try to light up. So, however it’s supposed to work, I’m still going to be the one to say “no” when someone offers me a cigarette.

She says it’s easy for a doctor to talk. He doesn’t smoke and has a wife (and probably a bit on the side) who’ll do for him. So he can just say, “Acomplia” like it’s the next best thing after the invention of sliced bread and we’ll all fall down and worship it. In the real world, I’m the one who has to eat healthy and stop smoking. Looking at me, she isn’t inspired with confidence. She’s given me the card for the funeral director down at the Co-op. Says I should start planning for the big day now.
